When we recently went to France, we boarded our fuzzies with the Ferret Inn as we wanted to be sure that they would be very well taken care of and loved. While dropping them off we fell in love with two more fuzzies. We talked about the possibilities of bringing them home over the next few weeks and decided last Saturday to adopt them. I don't have pics just yet (boy are they fast on their feet!) but hope to by this weekend. Mel, (formerly Floppy) is a beautiful champagne point hob. He's large and in charge, lol! His coat is a mix of cream and a lovely carmel (hence Mel) color. He's has some gorgeous big feet and an incredible personality. Iggy is an albino and another big boy. I can't believe how high he can jump when he's playing! Both are 7-9 months old.

Jester has needed a little more attention since we brought the new boys home as it seems he might be feeling a little left out. He was the guy on the top wrung (or so he thought anyway, lol) and it's taking him a while to adjust to the new additions but I think it will work out well.

Pinkin, being the only girl and a very petite one at that, has made sure that none of the boys mistake her for a helpless wimp, lol!

Oliver, normally lazing about, has gone to great lengths to ensure that Iggy and Mel understand he will whine like crazy to avoid confrontation :)~

I heard on my local newscast last night that our fuzzies can contract swine flu from humans. Be careful and make sure that anyone handling your fuzzies has washed hands.

Everything is going so beautifully with our new boys. Pinkin has even settled down and they all have a great time together. They are the perfect ferrets for us!! We've got them all harness trained so we can take them outside for fun in the grass. It sure is going to be hard not seeing them for two weeks when we go on vacation in the fall.

A Bitter-Sweet Day at Ferret Fuz

As time passed since adopting Loki and Pinkin, it had become apparent that Loki was developing some behavioral problems. Her biting continued to get worse, consistently drawing blood and as new ferret parents, we didn't feel we had the experience to handle it. So we called Nancy at the shelter who asked us to bring her in right away. I felt so horrible, that I had failed my Loki, but I knew we had to do something to ensure her quality of life. So we took both Loki and Pinkin to the shelter today. We put Pinkin in a large enclosed area and introduced her to several different ferrets. It didn't seem that she really wanted to be with the girls and rather preferred hanging with the guys. So we tried her with Tim (now Jester) and they got along quite well. Jester was cagemates with Tom (now Oliver) so we began to consider having 3 fuzzies in our home. Oliver and Pinkin needed some time to work out who was boss but soon settled down to playing together. While we are very saddened to not have Loki anymore, we are at the same time happy that she WILL end up in the right loving home for her AND we were able to give two other ferrets a loving home.

Obsession

So apparently, Pinkin is still obsessed with trying to get behind the tv. When we get home from work and let them out to play, she runs right over to the darn tv stand and starts digging at the doors and sides. The only time she'll leave it alone is when Loki is wrestling with her or they are upstairs. I wonder if it will stop when we move into the tv.

A couple of days ago, Pinkin got behind our TV stand, (we had company and had forgotton to stuff the towels back at either side so they can't get in there.) Well yesterday it seems she remembered that she had been back there and seemed obsessed with trying to reclaim terratory. She spent a long time scratching and digging at the towels (to no avail of course.) When she finally decided she couldn't get back there, she turned her attention to the fireplace which is right next to the TV. She ran from side to side digging at the corners of the glass screen and ended up somehow getting her head stuck in one side (there is fake stone on the wall there so the glass screen has some small spaces behind it.) We got her out and as soon as we put her down she tried to go straight back to it again! We ended up putting her in the cage for a few minutes and then she started playing with Loki and seemed to forget about it for a while. Never say these creatures don't have good memories, lol!

Settling In

Loki and Pinkin are settling in nicely and seem to love that they have almost the entire house to explore. Both of them are definitely little ankle nippers, even chasing us to get a small taste, lol! We're just giving off a yelping sound if they nip too hard though in effort to teach them that it's not okay to nip. We're totally attached to them and are enjoying every minute :)

Came home with a cage last night that we can use as a spare once the Ferret Nation one arrives. Loki was so funny, she kept trying to get into the cage as we were setting it up! So they both got to sleep comfortably in a hammock last night, happy babies!

After getting an email this morning that my order for my cage would arrive today (complete with tracking number) I went to the shelter to pick up my babies and bring them home. When I got home, there was a small box by my door containing the collars I ordered and the invoice said that the cage was shipping separately from a drop-shipper. So I call to find out when the cage would arrive and they tell me 2-4 weeks!!! WHAT?? But I have my ferrets now because of their email to me! So, now we will try to get creative until the cage arrives.

Nevertheless, they are home!

Played but waiting

Well, the new cage didn't make it in time to pick up our babies yesterday so we decided to wait to pick them up until the cage does get here which should only be another day or two. If the cage doesn't arrive by tomorrow, the Rescue Shelter director is going to loan us a small one so we can bring them home for the weekend. Here they are:

This is Loki
She is a one year old sable who was picked up as a stray covered in fleas and delivered to a local animal shelter who contacted the Ferret Inn for pickup. Due to her flea infestation, she was severely anemic and needed a blood transfusion from one of the stocky healthy boy ferrets.
She has almost doubled her weight and is so playful and happy!

This is Pinkin (originally named Punkin Pie)
Pinkin is a 1.5 year old cinnamon colored beauty was found in a cage outside on the freezing weather. She was put outside because the mom didn't want the smell in the house and the daughter lost interest. She was surrendered by an acquaintance of the previous owner. The guy who rescued her took her to a vet, but after the vet could not get a blood sample, the vet released her saying she'd have to stay overnight. She was then taken to The Ferret Inn and was unresponsive, severely dehydrated, barely breathing, and with a body temperature so low that the thermometer would not register. She was rushed to a ferret-knowledgeable vet and stayed overnight. Twenty-four hours later, she is conscious and able to move herself. Seeing how this is one of the worst neglect cases the director has seen, we cannot believe that she is alive today.

Cage Ordered

Ordered a cage for my new fuzzie last night, a Ferret Nation cage. Saw it at PetSmart yesterday and it was over $50 more there than online (and the shipping for everything I got was less than $20 so I still saved quite a bit.)

I also got a few accessories.

I've always been a "pet person", I've had dogs, a cat, birds, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, salamanders and even rats. That was in my younger days. I decided to go back to college in my 30's and then I found the love of my life, my husband. After getting married we bought a house in northern Carroll County. Working 50+ miles from home, a dog wasn't a good fit for us, we were away from home too much. So I began to consider what other pets might be a good fit, our home was so quiet with the kids having grown up and moved out. I came across some information about ferrets after hearing stories from a friend who has had several. I took my time to look into it and decided I wanted to rescue a fuzzie.

The search began and I found the Ferret Inn rescue shelter in Columbia, MD.

Though I haven't gotten my new fuzz-ball yet, (I have an appointment the day after tomorrow) and have poured endlessly over their posted picture gallery's and I can't begin to say how excited I am to find my new baby :)
